DESERT War stamped himself as the leading weight-for-age performer in the country with his brilliant all-the-way win in the Ranvet Stakes which made is Group 1 win number 5 for the champion at Rosehill on Saturday 13th March 2007.
It was the second Group One win for the six-year-old over 2000 metres after his victory in the Mackinnon Stakes last spring in which he punished his rivals in both events.
Sent out an odds-on favourite, Desert War, with Hugh Bowman on board, scored by a length-and-a-half over Confectioner with Railings, running on nicely for third, a length away.
Waterhouse said she was a little concerned with Desert War when Confectioner got within a half length near the 150 metre mark.
“He had me a little worried when he was only a length in front,” Waterhouse said. “He's usually five or six lengths in front of the opposition.
“He's very similar to Grand Armee,” Waterhouse said. “Physically he's almost the same. He's got a massive wither, a huge shoulder, an enormous girth and apparatus to put all his heart and lungs. He's just a remarkably physical horse.”
Waterhouse has not ruled out heading overseas with Desert War but said there were more Group 1 races at home to be picked-up before we head off overseas.
Bowman said he allowed Desert War to have a breather in the middle stages of the race before again stoking him over the last 800 metres and described the gelding as a warhorse.
“After going quickly into the first turn I was able to give him a good break down the back, so once I got to the half mile I set sail,” Bowman said. “He's not a sit and sprint horse, but when Confectioner came he still had a plenty left and now the rest his history!”
