Luke Nolen timed El Segundo finish to perfection to claim a two-length victory in the2007 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
Jockey Luke Nolen produced a patience performance on top of the Colin Little-trained El Segundo, hanging off Wonderful World as the field came off the final turm before releasing a scintillating sprint to finish well clear in the weight-for-age classic.
Wonderful World eventually finished second while the Damien Oliver-ridden Haradasun, who had led the field past the 1,000-metre mark, took third place.
Pre-race favourite Miss Finland could only manage fourth position.
Nolen said he enjoyed the perfect ride.
"It all went to script pretty nicely, I knew Wonderful World would spring well and it all sort of worked to plan," he said.
"We sort of just fell into that nice spot - three back, one off - and the El Segundo did the rest."
It was a sweet triumph for El Segundo and his connections, the six-year-old gelding having been pipped for victory by Fields of Omagh in last year's race.
Little said he had no doubt that El Segundo would make amends for last year's result.
