Fields Of Omagh created Cox Plate history when he became the oldest galloper to win Australasia's weight-for-age championship at Moonee Valley on Saturday 28/10/2006.
The nine-year-old, having his fifth consecutive starting the race, was given an emotional farewell from the track after connections announced this would be his last race.
JUST like the immortal Makybe Diva, a warrior called Fields Of Omagh saved the best until last.
This amazing thoroughbred stuck his neck out to claim an action-packed Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, in front 34,276 patrons stood to applaud a magnificent performance and pay homage to a sterling career and a true Champion of the Australian Turf.
Trainer David Hayes could not hid his delight after the warhorse's stirring victory, saying: "Just fantastic, just fantastic.''
Williams said he felt "fortunate and honoured'' to have had the winning ride.
"I was always confident, I didn't pull the whip until late,'' he said.
It was Fields Of Omagh's second amazing win in the Cox Plate after his success in 2003.
He was fifth at his first attempt in 2002, second in 2004 and third in 2005.
Considering the punishment required to compete in such a heavyweight bout, Fields Of Omagh is indeed the rarest of thoroughbreds.
