CHAMPION jockey Darren Beadman admitted to riding "a cheeky race" on now the Caulfield-Melbourne cups bound stayer Headturner, after he thrashed his rivals in winning the 2006 AJC Derby on Saturday 15th April in front of 50,112 Derby Day race fans.
"I had the best run in the race and he won accordingly," said Beadman, who won the AJC Derby on Octagonal in 1996.
"From about the 1800m mark to the 1000m he raced along by himself, just lobbed along enjoying it.
"I tracked Primus and I thought about moving a bit wide, but I thought I'll just ride a cheeky race.
"He just travelled beautifully all the way and simply outstayed them."
Headturner's win was a training masterpiece for John Hawkes and he stated that " he will only improve on that run and that we will see the best of this very promising stayer this spring"
Headturner's Derby win gave Hawkes his 90th career Group I win and Beadman his 75th triumph.
