Champion sprinting mare Miss Andretti suprised no one in winning the prestigous Horse of The Year award for the 2006/07 racing season on Monday night (26/11/2007).

Miss Andretti won 7 times during the 2006/07 season including 4 wins at Group 1 level, twice at group 2 level and once at group 3 level.

One of her group 2 wins was her inspirational win in June at  Royal Ascot in the United Kingdom. Miss Andretti`s award is also confirmed by her being one of the season`s highest raters when she went 122 in the Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley in Feburary.

Miss Andretti, who tackles the Group One International Sprint (1200m) on December 9 in Hong Kong, collected 75 of the votes, well clear of rivals Miss Finland (16), Haradasun and Takeover Target (three), Racing To Win (two) and Desert War.

Jockey Craig Newitt, who heads to Hong Kong on December 6 to unite with Miss Andretti, said the prestigious gong was never in doubt.

"She deserves to win it without a doubt. She's a multiple Group One winner and broke three track records in the process," said Newitt, who travelled to the UK with the mare and was on deck for both wins this spring.

She became the first specialist sprinter since Placid Ark 20 years ago to be crowned Australia's champion racehorse, polling 75 of a possible 102 votes to defeat Miss Finland (16 votes).

Even more compelling was Miss Andretti's win in the champion sprinter category, where she captured 97 of a possible 102 votes.

And to cap off a marvellous night for owner Sean Buckley, his six-year-old mare was voted most popular racehorse.
