Pompeii Ruler takes out Australian Cup

Pompeii Ruler closed with a rush to earn his first Group 1 win in the $1 Million Darley Australian Cup a 2,000-meter weight-for-age race that was the third and final Super Saturday Group 1 race run at Caulfield.

El Segundo was the favourite in the field of 13. Maybe Better, Casual Pass, Niconero, and Pompeii Ruler were prominent early. On the turn, Pompeii Ruler commenced his winning run and finished 1 1/4 lengths clear of Marasco, completing the distance in 2:01.53 over turf rated good.

Ridden by Craig Newitt, Pompeii Ruler was well-placed for the majority of the 2,000-metre race and was simply too strong for the star-studded field as he stretched his career earnings past the million-dollar mark.

Mick Price was overcome with emotion after the race and said it was an immensely satisfying win.

"It's a time-honoured Group One and these are the sort of races you've got to win," he said.

"He's been with me as a yearling, the horse, and I've stuck up for Newitt when he was just coming back. It's my best win ever.

The win gave jockey Craig Newitt two of the three Group One races on the program as he celebrated his 22nd birthday.
