“The Sky's The Limit”
On the 13 th October 2007 the Ross McDonald trained Weekend Hussler with jockey Brad Rawiller in the pilot seat started $1.95 odds on favorite in the Three-year-old Group 1 1600m Caulfield Guineas after only having 4 previous race starts.
“The Hussler” as he is now known to his race fans dominated his rivals by winning his first Group 1 Race with great ease and sheer brilliance,
Defeating Scenic Blast in second place and Marching in third.
After his astonishing win in the Caulfield Guineas Weekend Hussler had a three week break and returned to the races at Flemington on the 3rd November 2007 to take part in his second Group 1 race being the 1200m Coolmore Classic again starting at long odds on $1.60 Favorite.
Weekend Hussler and Brad Rawiller displayed yet again another astonishing performance by winning the Coolmore Classic which proved his first Group 1 victory was no fluke and The Australian Racing Industry and its supporters had just witnessed a true Champion in the making.
This was only the beginning of the “The Hussler's” and Brad Rawillers Group One victory onslaught as more slashing performances were in store as they returned to racing in 2008.
Starting off by smashing a star studded line up in the Oakleigh Plate by 2 lengths over 1100m defeating the very talented and world class sprinter in Magnus and Tramuntana back in third place, then being sent out the top choice, again starting as along odds on favorite at $1.70 and going on to win Flemington's famous Group 1 Newmarket, Carrying a huge weight for a Three-year-old of 56kgs he yet again defeated world class sprinter Magnus in a spectacular dual with “The Hussler” and Brad Rawiller stealing the show yet again!
Ross McDonald then had his sights firmly on the Sydney Autumn Carnival with his gun three-year-old loaded with plenty of bullets and ready to fire aiming firstly at the Group 1 Randwick Guineas where he staged an enormous and powerful burst down the centre of the track to defeat Triple Honour by the narrowest of margins, this brought up 5 amazing Group 1 wins for this action packed Three Year Old Bay Gelding by Hussonet out of Weekend Beauty.
In April 2008 Weekend Hussler was ranked the Worlds Best Three-Year-Old and the equal eighth best horse in the world with a timeform rating of 122.
Ross McDonald then set his superstar to achieve his 6 th Group 1 win as a three-year-old and etch their way into the history books equaling the record of the almighty Kingston Town who was the only horse in history to win 6 Group 1 races in a season 1979-1980.
To equal this record and stand alongside the legendary Kingston Town in the history books Weekend Hussler took his place in the Group 1 1500m George Ryder as a $2.90 favorite on 19 th April 2008 on Golden Slipper day at Rosehill Gardens, This was to be his hardest task to date as he was up against a field full of Group 1 winners in the likes of Racing to Win, Mentality, Casino Prince & Desert War.
They jumped away cleanly at the 1500m with Brad Rawiller & “The Hussler” settling nicely back in third position after Storm Hill & Desert War set the early pace.
Brad Rawiller came off their heels to start his run just before the top of the turn and he shot away to go onto another great victory reveling in the wet going defeating Racing to Win by 2 lengths on the line with Casino Prince back in third.
The Sydney crowed roared as Weekend Hussler & Brad Rawiller come thundering up the straight. On returning to scale Weekend Hussler and Brad we overwhelmed with a standing ovation from the crowd as they had just witnessed Australia 's new Champion of the Turf where by Weekend Hussler had just confirmed his place in the history books by being only the second horse in racing's history to win 6 Group 1 races in one season.
“I had the race won at the 600m mark, He came back under me very nicely. On the turn I asked him for his efforts and he just exploded and the rest is history. The Sky's the Limit with this Horse its every jockeys dream to be associated with a horse like this” Rawiller said.
