Dane Swan 2011 Brownlow Medal Winner
BRILLIANT Magpie Dane Swan is this season's Brownlow Medallist after claiming the AFL's most prestigious individual award in a dramatic count in Melbourne 26th September 2011.
On Saturday the Collingwood star, who finished with 34 votes -- the highest ever tally under the current system -- stands pivotal to his side's chances of a successful premiership defence but the accolade attained last night makes up for the disappointment of a year ago when he was beaten into third by Chris Judd when a dominant Brownlow favourite.
"Clearly being the favourite does not help," Swan said.
Swan, whose father Bill won similar accolades with Port Melbourne at VFL level, loomed as a leading chance when, against expectations, he polled well in the first half of the season to sit second with 13 votes behind Franklin after 10 rounds.
The midfielder had carried a quad injury to that stage of the season and travelled to Arizona with several teammates for a fortnight to recuperate, missing the Queen's Birthday clash with Melbourne. But he was outstanding from then on when polling in nine of the next 10 games and confirmed it was his medal with two votes against Fremantle in round 23.
"I am going to go back next year. That is a certainty now," he said.
