Twelve years after John Worsfold led the West Coast Eagles to the 1994 AFL Premiership as captain, the man known as ‘Woosha’ was at the helm as coach as the Eagles won their third flag.West Coast defeated the Sydney Swans by one point to take the ultimate prize, in the closest Grand Final since the 1977 drawn decider between North Melbourne and Collingwood. A game clear at the end of the home-and-away season, West Coast would drop its opening final in a thriller to the Swans at Subiaco. The Eagles would eventually emulate three other teams to lose in week one of the finals under the final eight system and go on to win the Premiership. After wins over the Western Bulldogs and Adelaide, the Eagles faced Sydney in the Grand Final, with the previous four meetings between the side, including the 2005 Grand Final, having been decided by less than a goal each time. The stage was set for a classic, and the 97 431 people at the MCG got exactly that. The Eagles exploded in the opening minutes, with the first three goals of the game, and led by 29 points when Ben Cousins joined Ashley Hansen and Quinten Lynch as multiple goalkickers late in the first half. An arm wrestle ensued, with crucial goals to Norm Smith Medallist Andrew Embley and a third to Lynch keeping the Swans at bay by 11 points at three-quarter time. With courage overflowing, West Coast would conjure goals to Steven Armstrong and Adam Hunter in the final term before playing out a scoreless final five minutes to again reach the top of football’s Everest, putting the cup once again in the hands of Worsfold.
