Australian cricketers Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer are the greatest-scoring opening pair in Australian Test history, after breaking the record in the 4 th Test against India in Mumbai in November 2004! An almost impenetrable combination since being thrust together in the 5 th Ashes Test at The Oval in 2001, Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer are the greatest-scoring opening pair in Australian Test history. The brilliant left-handers set a new benchmark in Mumbai on the 4 th of November 2004, when Langer swept Harbhajan Singh for four in the first innings of the 4 th Test against India. That boundary took the openers past the previous Australian record aggregate of 3887 runs – held by Mark Taylor and Michael Slater.

That milestone in Mumbai gave Hayden and Langer a new challenge – the world record opening aggregate of 6482 runs set by West Indian greats Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes. Great friends off the field, Hayden and Langer's ‘double impact' dominance at the top of the Australian order has dented reputations as quickly as they've taken the shine off new balls. The pair also extended their world record for double-century opening stands to six in 2004 – in the 2 nd Test against Sri Lanka in Cairns on the 9 th of July, and in the same match they became the first openers from any country to score a century in the same innings on five occasions. Their names and illustrious deeds are destined to ‘live on' through future generations…
