The first spin bowler to pass the magical 500 mark, Warne made his latest gilt-edged entry into cricket's history book by taking the wicket of Sri Lankan captain Hashan Tillakaratne (caught Andrew Symonds), on the final day of the First Test in Galle on March 12, 2004.
With the afternoon breeze from the Indian Ocean blowing across the picturesque ground and with rain clouds gathering a few kilometres down the coast, Warne began his first bowling spell after lunch, requiring only 1 wicket to join Walsh in the ‘500 Club'. According to noted cricket writer Peter Roebuck, “Warne's first delivery was driven through a fieldsman's legs. His second ball landed on the spot. In a moment of madness, Tillakaratne swept across the line and the ball looped up on the leg side. Andrew Symonds took a simple catch ……the prodigal son had taken his 500th Test wicket”.
On top of the world again, the champion leg-spinner began the Test on 491 wickets and ended it on 501 – his ten wicket haul spearheading Australia to a stunning, 197 run victory. The oft-used words “bowled Shane” had echoed around the ground time and time again as the redoubtable Warne mesmerised the bewildered Sri Lankan batsmen. It truly was a towering performance.
