One hundred years is a long time in sport, especially in one as tough as Rugby League. In 1908, nine teams battled it out to become the game's inaugural premiers. Back then the team with the most points at the end of the year was announced as the champions, however in this foundation year two teams stood alone atop the table on 18 points each – South Sydney and Eastern Suburbs.
It was decided to play the top four teams in an extra round and after both Souths Sydney and Eastern Suburbs won their respective ‘semi-finals' the two met in the first grand final – where Souths edged out Easts in a closely fought battle 14-12.
One hundred years on and to kick off the Centenary Season of Rugby League these two great Foundation Teams will clash once again. To acknowledge these two great teams and to commemorate their role in making Rugby League the great game that it is, The Centenary of Rugby League is proud to release these two stunning pieces entitled History in the Making.
Each lithograph features historic images of their respective clubs and includes the signature of either Rabbitohs legend John Sattler or Roosters great Brad Fitler.
