In only their 5th year as a joint venture team, the Wests Tigers claimed their first Premiership and sent the message to all that they were a force to be reckoned with. Pooling the pride and passion of two foundation clubs, Western Suburbs and Balmain, resulted in a team with a strong and wide supporter base and which was reflected in the West Tigers on-field performance. The Wests Tigers won 12 of their last 14 games and in so doing secured a spot in the final, facing up to the North Queensland Cowboys. The game was Wests Tigers for the taking, following Richards try in the 35 minute they hit the lead and never relinquished it, winning the game and the Premiership 30-16.
