The 2006 World Cup will forever be remembered as the time when Australian Football came of age. After years of heartache and near misses, our beloved Socceroos finally earned the right to perform on footballs biggest stage, and perform they did.
Thirty two nations from across the globe converged on Germany for the 18th Football World Cup in June 2006. One of those nations was Australia, playing in their first World Cup since 1974 and only their second ever. First up was Australia versus Japan on June 12th, which saw us go down 1 nil early in the piece before famously finishing over the top to record a 3-1 victory. This was followed by Australia versus 5 times champions Brazil on June 18th, which saw the Socceroos valiantly match it with their highly fancied opponents before losing out 2-0, but not before the football world watched in wonder at the spirit of these Socceroos from down under. Our final and decisive pool match was against Croatia on June 22nd, which saw a torrid tussle before the Socceroos got the draw they needed in a 2-2 deadlock.
Australia had done the seemingly impossible and qualified for the second round. A nation of insomniacs kept up their midnight madness as we battled with 3 times champions Italy on June 26th. After being on the attack for 93 minutes, we so cruelly succumbed to a penalty goal in the dying seconds, a penalty goal that will live on in the nightmares of a nation for years come, to gallantly go down 1-0.
Football came alive during the magical month of June 2006, and the Socceroos proved that they belong at sports biggest event. This sensational lithograph commemorating the Socceroos 2006 World Cup is your chance to relive all of the games, players and action. Featuring key imagery and match results from all of the games, as well as an image of all 23 players plus super coach Hiddink, and personally signed by Australian captain Mark Viduka.
